Anovulation: Not ovulating is typically the cause for irregular periods. As a consequence of lack of ovulation the ovaries produce too little of progesterone. Instead, the ongoing production of estradiol stimulates the build up of the inner lining on the one hand, but at some point may become insufficient to do so on the other, at which point bleeding/spotting commences.
