A member asked:

For 6 yrs now, i been experiencing itchy, painful, irritated and tingling red spots with white coating on my tongue. it appears for many weeks on different areas of my tongue then clears up & returns?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Glossitis: Such inflammation of the tongue could be due to allergies and/or intolerances to foods, toothpaste, or autoimmune disorder, vitamin deficiencies. Chronic cases of uncertain cause may be referred to the oral pathology department at a local dental school. In the meantime washes of the tongue with maalox or glyoxide drops are soothing and oral based cortisone type cream like kenalog (triamcinolone) orabase May help.
