No it not: Yes the Today Sponge is safe for women to use. It is not known to cause infections today. Yes in the past (1995) there were reports of Toxic shock syndrome but apparently that was due to the way it was manufactured.Today a different company makes the sponge and it is safe. But it is not as effective as Birth control pills, the sponge trys to kill/block sperm. Birth cont pill stops ovulation=better

Safe if used right: The Today Sponge is back! It was taken off the market years ago because the factory making it had contamination in their water source. Now it is made in a different factory and appears to be free of contamination and safe. If left in too long, however, it can cause toxic shock syndrome, just like leaving a tampon in too long. So it must be removed at least every 24 hrs.
