Perhaps gas, but...: pain in the gut is caused by stretching of the intestinal wall. Most cases of abdominal tenderness is gas, indigestion, stress/anxiety, or something that will pass on its own. However, pain in the area you describe could also be the beginning of acute diverticulitis, which is something like a left sided appendicitis.
