All about blood.: Bruising happens when blood vessels break or leak a bit due to trauma. The blood which leaks out is initially red, but turns dark then shades of purple / green / yellow as the blood is broken down. This is often associated with a spreading of the color sometimes far beyond the location of the original trauma.
