Foley catheter: A Foley catheter is used to drain urine from the bladder. It is often used in conjunction with surgery and childbirth. It may be used during hospitalization for monitoring purposes. There is a condition called urinary retention in which a individual is unable to empty their bladder and a Foley catheter is utilized.

Here are some...: Catheter insertion to the bladder is done to confirm and relieve symptoms of urinary retention, which may occur silently or under temporary bladder dysfunction by positioning, injury including surgery, pain med, anesthesia, etc. Rule: Check postvoid residual urine (PVR) for all patients under IV but not voiding in 3-5 hours so to avoid bladder damage by unwanted or ignored bladder overdistention.
