It's possible: Chronic smoking can cause infections such as bronchitis which is inflammation of the large airways causing a buildup of mucus. It can also lead to emphysema and cancers of the respiratory tract. It is essential that you are evaluated & get a full history, physical & workup to determine the cause which may be treatable. Consider enrolling in a smoking cessation program.
