Depends: It depends on the type of abnormality. Low counts, i.e., anemia may be due to nutritional deficiency, bleeding, hemolysis etc. High counts may be due to living at high altitude, heart and lung disease and tumors of red cell producing cells, e.g., polycythemia vera.
