Diarrhea: Bacterial infections, such as those from campylobacter, salmonella, shigella, and yersinia, may cause mucus to be passed in the stool. Clostridium difficile can also cause these symptoms. Other possibilities are irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis. A stool analysis can rule out the bacterial causes. You may need to have a colonoscopy as well to make a diagnosis.
