Virus: You do have taste buds on your tongue but they usually do not hurt. You may have a virus. Drink plenty if cold drinks and take over the counter meds like you would take for a headache. If not better in 48 hours or if you run temp higher than 103 see your doctor.

Papillae: These bumps on your tongue are called papillae. In the front you have Fungiform Papillae which are smaller hair like projections and in the back you have larger rounded papilla called Vallate Papillae and on the sides of your tongue you have Foliate Papillae. Sometimes these papillae get inflamed and can be tender a little for no apparent reason. It usually subsides within a day or two.
