Relax!: Assuming you've not had any serious psychiatric conditions develop so far at 35, you are past the age at which most women manifest symptoms of bipolar disorder. While bipolar disorder clearly runs in families, it isn't as clearly genetic like blue eyes or skin color. It's good you're aware of the risk and you should make sure your doctor knows of your family history.

The empirical risk: of having BPD is usually 20% if one parent has it, unless the family tree shows autosomal dominant inheritance, or a 50% chance. If your mom could not parent in a consistent manner because her illness was not controlled with medications & therapy during your developmental years, therapy will help you continue to understand,, forgive & set limits with her now. It will help you heal, also.
