Wash up: While rats do carry and transmit some diseases, your best defense if you come into contact with droppings or urine is to wash up immediately. Shower with soap and water. Change clothes and wash the dirty ones in hot water. Chances are pretty slim you'll catch anything. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!

Don't touch/inhale: Certain exotic infectious diseases are associated with rodent droppings, including Hantavirus infection and Leptospirosis. Therefore, don't touch the stuff with bare hands and wear a mask if you are cleaning an area that has rodent urine and feces.
