Bleeding common: Most women who take birth control pills have no side effects, but the most common side effect in the first 1-3 months is irregular, unpredictable bleeding that gets better over time. Missing pills makes spotting more likely (and the pill less effective). If you're still having irregular bleeding after 3 months, a different pill might be worth a try.
