Pancreatic cancer: Although ca 19-9 is often elevated in patients with pancreatic cancer, it can also be increased in patients with other gastrointestinal cancers, cirrhosis, pancreatitis and diseases of the bile ducts. Likewise, even if there is a tumor in the pancreas, the ca 19-9 may be normal in approximately 10% of the population that does not express that serum marker. It needs to be interpreted in context.
