Depends . . .: Warm compresses if red & hot; cold compresses if injured. Heat is ok for infection while cold is better for injuries. Since you didn't mention any injury, i'm going to assume none which suggests infection, arthritis, possibly gout. You didn't mention any redness or insect bite or cut/puncture which could support infection. Bottom line: go see your family doc for evaluation, diagnosis & treatment.
