Perimenopause: Women in their late 40's or early 50's who start to see a change in their periods are thought to be in a stage of perimenopause ("around menopause"). This can last several more months.

Could be menopause: Menopause would be the most common cause. However, the minimum evaluation would involve some blood work that looks at the ovarian function and pituitary gland. Pituitary abnormalities are more common in women and later in life. But the most likely cause is the declining function of the ovaries.
