Abdominal symptoms: Lactose intolerance usually causes symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and cramping when one has consumed the milk sugar, lactose. In addition to milk, lactose is also found in ice cream, cheese, and other milk/dairy products. Lactaid may be beneficial in those with lactose intolerance.

None, gas, diarrhea: Affected by severity of condition and "dose" of lactose. Digestive problem, not an allergy. Limited digestion of milk sugar. Can cause gas, bloat, cramps, pain, loose stool; not bleeding, weight loss, anemia , fever. Rx: low lactose dairy (hard cheese, lactose reduced milk, yogurt, kefir), eat as part of mixed meal, lactase products (e.g. Lactaid), small amts, avoid. If omit, watch re: calcium.
