Yes: Pap smear is uncomfortable because it is not in a very comfortable area. However, there are definitely ways to decrease the discomfort. The pain is caused by the speculum and pressure from the stretching as it opens the area for a pap smear to be done. If the speculum is properly warmed and not too large and if more time is given to slowly open the speculum, the discomfort is less.
