No set time, but...: It really depends on how bad the infection is or was. If it is a mild infection, the pain and inflammation should go away relatively quick. It will be longer if the infection is more severe. However, if you are not feeling any improvement after a week of antibiotics, i would see the doctor again. The bug causing the infection may be resistant to the antibiotic or it may be something else.

Pyelonephritis : Usually the outpatient treatment of a kidney infection is 2 weeks of antibiotics. If you are still in pain after 1 week of therapy you may need an ultrasound of the kidneys to make sure you don't have an abscess, which would require a more aggressive treatment strategy.
