A member asked:

Are oct, oct visante, ora, ubm together an extensive enough exam to diagnose/rule out glaucoma for sure? if not what is?

Chicago hope : The best analysis lays between the ears of your doctor. All of these tests are worthless if one does not understand the meaning of the tests, false positive and negatives, as well as statistics. As the neurosurgeon on chicago hope said to a question how come he knows the ct was negative, " I am just smarter than the other doctors who didn't understand how to read the film!".

Glaucoma: The best way to diagnose glaucoma is an ophthalmic exam by an experienced ophthalmologist. Tests sucha as visual fields, oct, ubm, gdx, hrt etc. Only provide support for the clinical experience and observation of an ophthalmologist. There is no gimic yet devised to replace clinical experience and observation.

See your doctor: While these tests are useful in helping your doctor diagnose glaucoma, the test will not make the diagnosis. You still need to have visual field testing and a complete eye exam. Then your doctor can use the infoation to make a diagnosis.

Nope..: The things you listed are certainly helpful in diagnosing and following glaucoma, but they are all designed to measure anatomic structures and their changes in the eye. You'd also need a visual field test (e.g., humphrey visual field analyzer) to test the function of the optic nerve, as well as corneal pachymetry and serial measurements of intraocular pressure.
