Excellent question!: As with any & all conditions, find out cause and address it first. In young adults, we worry about secondary hypertension, in other words, high blood pressure caused by some other condition, for instance, renal artery stenosis. Don't forget lifestyle eg excess salt & fat. So make sure you've had an appropriate evaluation. If no cause is found, then we diagnose "essential" HTN & prescribe drugs.

Lifestyle change/med: Lifestyle change is the first step in treating high blood pressure. Weight loss, regular physical activity, alcohol and salt moderation, and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables (dash diet) can all lower BP significantly. After this, medicines are very effective and required to get the blood pressure to a safe level.
