Bartholins Abscess: Patients with cysts may present with painless labial swelling. Abscesses may present spontaneously or after a painless cyst with the following symptoms:
acute, painful unilateral labial swelling
dyspareunia
pain with walking and sitting
sudden relief of pain followed by discharge (highly suggestive of spontaneous rupture)
you need an evaluation urgently by a physician.

Need diagnosis first: A vaginal discharge is anything coming from the vagina that is more than the scant amount of normal mucous that healthy women have. A discharge that doesn't smell bad can still be an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria, or a mild infection with germs such as chlamydia (discharges get worse as infections get worse). A woman with a discharge should see her doctor to rule out various infections.

No symptoms: In the short term, if you have no particular symptoms (discharge, odor, itch, abnormal bleeding, pain, etc), there should be no reason to suspect any particular problem. In the long term, after age 21, women should have annual exams with a pelvic exam (including cultures, paps, etc as indicated) to assess and screen for occult problems.

A 33-year-old member asked:
Is it normal for me to be wet all the time on my vaginal area it drives me crazy?

Dr. Carolyn Quist answered
Gynecology 35 years experience
Maybe: Vaginal moisture is typically due to hormone changes in the vagina or excess cervical mucus production. Occasionally there could be an infection causing the problem. Other factors could be involved including being overweight and wearing tight clothing. I would suggest speaking to a physician about this at your next visit to see if something can be done to change it.

Kegel exercises: If done properly, the so-called kegel exercises can help strengthen some of the muscles in the area. Learning about them from a magazine, a friend, an unregulated website is not the best approach. Seeing a gynecologist or urogynecologist is worth the effort to learn how and how often to do them.
