Weight Loss: Hypermetabolism, or increased metabolic rate, means you are burning more calories than you are taking in. This may be due to exercise, hyperthyroidism, cancer, serious injury, infection, stress, taking amphetamines or hormonal problems. Ultimately, the result is weight loss and if the weight loss is prolonged, it is called cachexia, the extreme emaciation of people who are near death.
