Exercise, diet.: Herniated disks are a fact of life and will effect the majority of the population at least once in their life. Do not gain weight, stop smoking and exercise regularly. If you have a recurrent episode of back pain or sciatica, consider use of otc nsaids if you can tolerate them.

Avoid heavy lifting: Maintain a healthy body weight and if obese loose weight.Exercise regularly.Peactice good posture, to reduce stress on your back.Use proper lifting techniques like lifting by squatting and bending your knees and using your legs to push yourself up.Stop smoking if you do as nicotine and other toxins from tobacco smoke can harm the discs in your back.
