Likely trauma: Bruising and swelling in an area that hurts almost always indicates some trauma. It's possible that your friend has a broken rib or just soft tissue injury. Do they remember any history of trauma? If not, did they get hit in the head? It is possible that it could be something else, but i would give it some time to go away. If it doesn't, they should see their doctor.
