Dystrophic vs fungus: You most likely do have a fungal infection of the nails and this condition can be very hard to treat. Lots of times you need to take an oral antifungal for a prolonged period of time. There is also a condition in which nails are actually dystrophic and not infected but, at your age this is not really likely. I recommend you see a dermatologist for a definitive diagnosis and treatment.

Difficult to rid: You can try oral medications but beware of side effects. Laser treatment has shown to be effective.

Several treatments.: The reason you hear so many different treatments for toenail fungus is because there is no perfect, sure-fire treatment that works 100% of the time. I've seen vaporub work, as well as other natural oil remedies, but rarely. You can also try laser therapy, antifungal creams, paints, or even oral medications if your doctor deems you healthy enough to take them. Topical treatment is least effective.
