Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) not for pain: Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is an expensive alternative to generic effexor. Neither are indicated to treat pain. Cymbalta works well for many types of unrelated pain. Tell your doctor you prefer the cymbalta, if pain is an issue for you!

? more effective: Cymbalta may be more effective for pain control. Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) has never been fda approved for pain managment while Cymbalta has. These are somewhat similar meds but i always prescribe Cymbalta for pain control when appropriate because it has the data supporting its effectiveness.

Ask why switched?: Cymbalta is better for pain & approved for pain. However in certain situations where a patient has problems tolerating Cymbalta or its not helping or interacting with other medications or pt. Still feels depressed on Cymbalta then a switch to Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is reasonable. Prescribing is based upon how we think they work in the brain, and they are similar. We do the best to mix and match meds for all sx.&.
