A member asked:

Is it a general rule of thumb to see a pcp for everything and he will refer you to a specialist or can you check with a specialist from the start?

Preference: It depends on your insurance requirements as well as on your personal preference and medical complexity. Most generally healthy people are well served by primary care. Complex cardiac / pulmonary / endocrine (/etc.) problems may be better addressed by going to the expert. Primary are better at overall coordination of healthcare.
