Elevation ice: Keep your ankle elevated higher than your heart. Ice packs can be applied 20 minutes/hour (some doctors can apply and ice bladder that pumps ice under the cast or splint since may take a bit of time for ice to cool thru a cast or splint. If pain is severe and worsening call your doctor sometimes the dressing is too tight or there is too much pressure in your foot or calf muscles.

Pain: An ankle broken in 3 places is a very painful injury (i'm sure i don't have to tell you that). If it just happened, pain meds will probably only take the edge off the pain. If the pain meds are making you sick, ask for anti-nausea medicine such as Phenergan (promethazine) or vistaril. Aside from this, elevate as much as possible--ice it for 20 minutes at a time, and try to keep it still (rest).
