Keep 'em functioning: Mental health clinics, public or private, offer counseling and medication when appropriate. Some mental health problems are 'curable'; others are 'manageable'. In either case, the goal of the clinic is to keep patients functioning and achieving their realistic goals. Oh yes, and a good mental health professional has a goal of getting a patient healthy enough to not have to come back.

Yes: I know we have them in california and i expect most states have them. I recommend you call the state run insurance for your state to ask them (e.g. Medical in california). You should also check with any local universities that have a graduate psychology program since they usually have free or low cost clinics for where the doctoral students see clients.
