Yes: The pain of open inguinal hernia repair is not unlike a really bad pulled muscle--any activity involving your core or groin muscles will hurt for at least a week. Don't be discouraged--the pain will diminish considerably over the next few weeks. Follow your surgeons recommendations for activity limits & pain medication. If you are getting worse instead of better, your surgeon will want to know.

Yes, unfortunately.: Use an ice pack or frozen peas on the area, take some aleve (naproxen) or ibuprofen, and try to keep moving around. It should get much better over the next few days. Using prescription medication is also ok, but it can cause significant constipation. Young physically fit men always have a lot of pain after hernia repair.
