Further evaluation: Normal size (diameter) of a common bile duct is 1.2 cm or smaller. Ct finding of "prominence" means enlargement or thickening of the duct wall. Either circumstance can be benign (have no relevance to any disease process), or might be caused by an issue that is worth pursuing. If the liver function tests are abnormal, your doctor will probably want to do further testing. If normal, probably not.

Yes: Ct of the abdomen can reliably diagnose dilation of the common bile duct. For someone of your age (50), the cbd diameter is about 5 mm, and usually shouldn't exceed 7 mm, with anything more than that considered prominent. Ct can also show a stone in the duct if the stone is relatively dense. Similar it can also show dense stones in gallbladder or signs of inflammation.
