Azygos vein: The azygos vein transports blood from the posterior walls of the thorax and abdomen into the superior vena cava. The anatomy of this blood vessel can be quite variable. Distention of this may be due to superior vena caval syndrome. See a vascular surgeon and have this evaluated.

Not Azygos Vein!: The azygos vein lies in the chest and is not visible on the surface of your body. As to why a superficial chest wall vein has become prominent, reasons include congestive heart failure or blockage of a main vein which then results in other veins taking up the slack. You should see your doctor to have the cause evaluated.
