Depends: Almost any oily material can be used to suffocate living head lice if applied liberally to the affected scalp and left on for 12-18 hours (they can hold their breath).Many use a bathing or shower cap to keep it in place. It is unlikely to do anything to the egg casings that remain attached to the hair & may hatch later if not removed.
