A 27-year-old female asked:
How can you tell the difference between flexible or rigid flat feet?

Sit down: A flexible flat foot is usually related to ligamentous laxity where a rigid flatfoot is usually more of a boney abnormality. When standing up, both the flexible and rigid flatfoot will be flat. When the weight is taken off the foot, a rigid flat foot will stay flat where a flexible flat foot will have a normal arch. Easily: See your foot and ankle surgeon. He will examine you and determine. Just as the words mean is ur difference. Does the foot bend and flex? Then it's flexible. Is the foot rigid like a board?

DIFFERENCE: X-rays and a physical exam, performing the Jack test, can differentiate between the two.

Generic term: Flat feet is a generic term referring to feet that does not have a typical arch associated with "normal" feet. Although it's not necessarily bad to have "flat feet", it can lead to pain and mobility problems. Hope this answers your question.

A 36-year-old member asked:
Can anyone tell me what can you do about flat feet?

See below: More support shoes, orthotics and stretching exercises will often help alleviate any symptoms that result from "flat feet". Only surgical intervention can actually structurally raise the arch. Surgery is normally a last resort reserved for the most severe cases in the right individual.

Several: There are several ways. You could ask to compare your foot structure with other people. You can get your feet slightly damp and then stand on a white paper towel, then look for an arch after getting off the towel. The best way, consult your local area podiatrist.
