Nothing small elbow: Ear aches in adults and children are usually self limiting. Your mother probably said nothing smaller than your elbow should go in your ear. This is wise. If you are having fevers and intense pain it may be a sign of an inner ear infection and a doctor can recommend antibiotics. For many other ear infections a few days of rest is probably best.

Yes: Warmed olive oil, a few drops in the painful ear, will significantly reduce pain within a few minutes. It works even better if it's garlic infused olive oil. Do not use this remedy if there is drainage from the ear. Make sure the oil is not hot enough to burn. If high fever develops and ear pain worsens, the remedy has failed, see your doctor.
