Cervix: The cervix is very friable during pregnancy meaning that it can bleed easily. This is why some women will spot after a pap smear. Spotting associated with cramping during the first trimester of pregnancy can be a warning sign of miscarriage. Ultrasound should help reassure both the patient and the doctor about any spotting during the first trimester if all is well.
