A 32-year-old male asked:

do i need a referral from my dr to get an x-ray?

Dr. Marvin Den
Internal Medicine 45 years experience
Yes: It is unlikely the you can get an x-ray of any sort without a doctor's order.
Dr. Dan Fisher
Internal Medicine 27 years experience
Yes.: An xray is a test and like any other test must be chosen wisely to get the right answer with the least amount of radiation. Ordering is limited to professional providers with very good reason. Imagine if you could get an xray at your local supermarket. How many would just drop in to check things out? Bad idea.

Dr. Kenneth Adler
Family Medicine 40 years experience
Yes: In fact, paget's disease is commonly discovered on xrays done for another reason. It is a disease of abnormally forming bone that most commonly affects the spine, pelvis, femur, sacrum or skull. It can affect one or more of those areas. Often it causes no symptoms. Sometimes it is discovered because of an abnormaly high blood test called an alkaline phosphatatase.

Where do I go to get an intravenous pyelography done? At the X-ray place or the hospital?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Ralph Morgan Lewis
Family Medicine 38 years experience
Depends: Depends on whether the hospital imaging department or the stand-alone imaging department does that specific test. Traditionally, hospital x-ray depts did them; out-of-hospital facilities tend to do plain radiographs, ct scans, MRI scans, possibly pet scans. A urologist may have xray facilities in his office to do such studies. Ask your pcp where he refers his pts for ivp's.
