Failed back syndrome: Persistent or recurrent pain years after a spinal fusion is not uncommon. There is a known increased incidence of premature degeneration of the adjacent disc spaces above and below a fused segment. This condition can manifest itself as low back pain and/or leg pain (i.e., sciatica). This may indicate compression of the spinal nerves and may require a formal evaluation from a spine specialist.
