A 32-year-old member asked:

can i take allegra and benadryl (diphenhydramine) together?

Yes, but why: Allegra (fexofenadine) and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are both antihistamines. Allegra doesn't cross into the brain, so no sedation. Benadryl commonly causes sedation. Typically there is no advantage to taking the 2 together, but also there is no harm at usual doses.

Maybe: Depending on what you are treating, i would space them out, take Allegra in the morning and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night. Not sure what you are treating though. I can see that with urticaria but for nasal allergies, i would use a nasal spray instead of a second antihistamine.

2 antihistamines: At usual doses, there should not be significant side effects from taking these 2 antihistamines together. If a person is needing this much for relief, consider seeing an allergist for an evaluation.

What will happen if I drink alcohol while taking allegra (fexofenadine) d?

Intoxication: Alcohol causes nasal congestion so you may find that drinking renders Allegra d less effective for symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Because the antihistamine in Allegra d does not cause drowsiness it won't increase the sedative & depressant effects of alcohol. I found no reports of adverse effects of alcohol & the decongestant present in Allegra d. Remember to always drink sensibly & responsibly.

Can I still take allegra (fexofenadine) if I have liver disease?

Dr. Stephen Kimura
Allergy and Immunology 35 years experience
Maybe: Allegra (fexofenadine) is metabolized mainly through the liver so the dosage will need to be adjusted. It will depend on how severe the liver disease and the dosage of allegra (fexofenadine). You need to discuss this with your doctor.

Not much: They are both antihistamines and would reduce allergic symptoms. The Benadryl (diphenhydramine) might make him/her a bit sleepy.

A 19-year-old female asked:

Can you take nasacort, Allegra-D, and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) all together without problems?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Kristin Sokol
Allergy and Immunology 12 years experience
Yes, but...: 19 yo female taking nasacort, allegra-D and benadryl (diphenhydramine) all together. Yes, it is safe to take these together. For allergies, often a nasal spray and one oral antihistamine improve symptoms greatly. Don't use Allegra-D for more than 3 days at a time, try just regular Allegra. Also benadryl (diphenhydramine) can make you tired and only last a few hours. See allergist if this combo of meds still not helping symptoms
