Multiple causes: Pain emanates from muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and/or glands. Muscles clench and strain. Nerves can be pinched or pulled. Blood vessels can be calcified, blocked by swollen muscles or clots. Glands can be strained or blocked. If blocked by stones or mucous plugs, drying of the mouth can cause saliva back up with painful consequences. Talk to your dentist and physician for help.

Tongue pain: Could be a variety of things, from salivary gland obstruction to heart disease. If it only occurs during exercise, see your physician for a stress test. If it occurs with eating, see your dentist or oral surgeon.
