Histamine release: Many narcotic or opioid pain medicines cause itching as a side effect. One of the actions of the medicine causes certain cells in your skin (mast cells) to release histamine, a chemical that causes itching (and swelling) if severe, this can cause a rash or look like hives (urticaria). An antihistamine will help, or you can switch to non narcotic pain medicines.
