Could be either: Brown spotting can be seen in both situations--an early pregnancy or an irregular cycle. I would need a lot more information from you to figure out what is going on. Therefore, if this is an ongoing problem for yourself, i would recommend that you seek-out your gyn to discuss/review your entire ob/gyn history so that you can rectify the issue.
