Break thru bleeding: When a woman on bcp gets a period other than in the 4th week of her pills it is break through bleeding. This is common in the first few cycles of a new pill, or if she was late taking one or more pills. It also occurs if the hormones in the pill are not quite balanced for her uterus. If this goes on 2-3 mths you may need to switch pill formulations.
