High protein diet: A diet that has 1.5g/kg of your body weight as protein, is low in fat, and ideally consumed within half an hour of resistance exercise is a physiologic way of building muscle mass.

Caloric intake.: This is a very delicate dance, involving the timing of your medications (basal and bolts), timing of exercise and timing and composition of meals before and after exercise. You should certainly eat a good mixed meal right after exercise to avoid hypoglycemia, and you may want to sip on a carbohydrate drink during exercise, too - not a lot, but just to keep some calories in.
