A member asked:

How do you treat short stature and how to prevent the closing of the bones - will this allow the boy (14 yrs) to continue growing?

Depends on situation: If the kids bone maturity matches his age (xray test), the kid will grow until the growth centers close( for 14yo averages 6 in). You cannot prevent them from closing. This is a normal response to hormones. If a bone maturity was more like 11 & testing showed low growth hormones, they could be used to push him along & grow to his potential height.

Variable: There are strict fda-approved indications for gh rx which include gh deficiency, certain syndromes, and severe small stature as determined by growth chart plots. Experimental treatment with Letrozole is available thru some pediatric endocrine centers, which can help to keep growth plates open, but se may be fertility issues and spine problems. It's not fda approved and may not be worth risks.
