A member asked:

I am pregnant and wondering about the safety of the flu vaccine based on the thimerosol content. can even trace amounts negatively impact my baby?

Thanks for asking: This is an important question. Influenza is more likely to cause severe illness or even death in someone who is pregnant and the flu shot is definitely recommended. Millions of doses have been given during pregnancy with no evidence of harm. It protects the baby as well as the mom. Thimerosol is not in single-dose vials of vaccine - just in multidose vials as a preservative.

Safe/ no problem: In spite of a barrage of lay complaints about thimerosol there has never been any evidence that it caused any human condition and or learning deficit or autism. The injectible flu vaccine is the preferred flu vaccine in pregnancy because it doesn't involve giving mom a live virus (nasal spray).Death due to flu during pregnancy does occur & happened twice in my town 3 years ago.
