Slowly: Generally recommended to taper betablockers. Atenolol 50 mg to 25 mg for a few days, then discontinue. If you are going to take another betablocker, you do not have to taper.

Gradually...: Perhaps you can take half the dose for a week, half of a half for another week and then stop. However the best person to decide how is your doctor who knows you best.
