Tonsils: These are either an infection if you have a sore throat and fever, or food particles stuck on it if you have large irreguler tonsils, or stones that come out periodically. See your doctor to dtermine which it is.

Tonsil stones: At the back of the throat are structures called tonsils. They may look like pink golf balls, but are more like a head of cauliflower with crypts that can trap bits of food, debris and bacteria. On occasion, calcifications ("tartar" like on teeth) or infections can develop in these crypts. All infections smell bad. Gargling with salt water or listerine may help, but sometimes you need to see a doc.
