Dr. George Klauber answered

Specializes in Pediatric Urology

Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Bactrim: Best antibiotic depends upon the causative organism (bacteria). Most utis are due to e. Coli and most utis will respond to a short course of cipro, (ciprofloxacin) bactrim, or macrodantin. The latter sterilizes the urine ANS is great for lower urinary tract infections ie cystitis, but not good where good tissues are require as for pyelonephritis(kidney infection) i deally urine should be cultured before treatment.

Depends: Selecting the most effective antibiotics depends upon the organism(bacterium) isolated from properly collected urine sample. Given the multiplicity of causative organism in urinary tract infections and antibiotic resistance bacteria develop, there is no panacea.
